MYOG - Burrito bag For x-Mid 2 Pro

I haven’t really made any MYOG project despite having some sewing skills due to some career choices made when I was young. Recently decided to get into doing a bit more as I felt that I wanted certain gear which wasn’t available to buy.

Here’s my first project: Burrito Bag for X-Mid 2 Pro.

I started by making a prototype of a burrito bag for X-mid Pro 2 to fit it on the pack's side pocket. It’s missing a flap and maybe compressions straps (probably not). Unfortunately the cheap, gifted sewing machine was already struggling with the cheap cotton, and I'm used to industrial ones, so it was slow and painful to make a simple bag. I used to have a simple, heavy duty Pfaff but I think the renters of our house nicked it (among other things) when we lived in NZ. Need to get a decent one before I can make the final product, probably looking at Singer HD as I don't have the space for a industrial one.

Here’s the prototype

Sewing with the Janome was painful and I looked around, found a good deal on eBay and picked up a Singer Heavy Duty 4423.

I proceeded to order some fabric. I bought 2oz waterproof ripstop poly from Amazon.

So I finished my burrito bag, this time with a flap. I took inspiration from Exped and SD burrito bags.

This allows me to fit the Pro to side pocket (or under / top). The measurements are such that I only need to fold the bathtub in half, which allows me to keep the bathtub at the outer side of the roll. I just fold the fly so that it collapses over the bathtub, fold the bathtub over widthwise, then fold it lengthwise and roll. This leaves the rods in one end and last to roll to avoid breaking them.

2oz waterproof poly ripstop
3mm shock cord
cord lock
29g / 1oz.

Here’s a rough guide how to make one.

There are three pieces (flap is not drawn below).

Essentially you're making a bathtub shaped bag, a tube which is open on one side. Just remember to make the collars tall enough (you can always trim excess off). Then just sew a channel for the shock cord around the collar. Flap is a rectangle shaped piece, but not full width of the bag, sewn on one side on the long edge.

The measurements are

Large panel

Width = Width of the planned rolled tent + seam allowance
Height = Circumference of the planned rolled tent x 1.5 or 2 + seam allowance

End panel

Width = Diameter of the planned rolled tent + seam allowance
Height = Circumference of the planned rolled tent x 1.5 or 2 + seam allowance

Flap panel

Width = 60-80% of the width of the large panel
Height = 10-20% of the width of the large panel

Method

  1. Measure & cut the fabric

  2. Sew the side panels on the main panel

  3. Fold the seam allowance and sew that from the top to re-enforce the seam

  4. Sew 1 (shared) or 2 (individual) buttonholes (big enough to fit a safety pin or tool to push the shock cord through) where you want them to be, mid or end, leaving enough to fold a wide enough channel + allowance

  5. Needle/clip the flap panel on to the main panel

  6. Fold the fabric to create the channel and sew it

  7. Thread the shock cord through the button hole and all around to create a loop

  8. Add cord lock to shock cord & tie a knot on the shock cord

  9. Enjoy your burrito
